Windows 10 microphone doesn't work – how to fix it

febrero 7, 2020

A number of factors can keep your Windows 10 microphone from working properly. This could be due to improper installation of some drivers after a system update. This can also happen when you accidentally turn off some features of the Windows microphone.

A microphone may also stop working due to a hardware malfunction. In this case, the only way to repair it is to entrust your computer to a professional technician. But before you get there, consider trying the methods listed below.

Method 1: Solve sound problems

This is probably the first thing to do when you have problems with your microphone or audio system. Before trying to repair your computer, give it a chance to repair itself.

Your computer is designed to be able to diagnose itself and detect any underlying problem that could interfere with its normal operation. The best part of it all is that it can also be repaired if a fault is detected during a diagnostic scan.

The Troubleshooting tool is an integrated tool that you can easily run by right-clicking on the sound icon in the taskbar. A small popup window will appear and from there, click on Solve sound problems.

The tool will perform an analysis of the entire system and if a problem is detected, it will recommend the options to resolve the problem.

Method 2: Make sure the microphone is turned on in Windows 10 settings.

As I mentioned earlier, you can sometimes accidentally turn off certain functions of your microphone. To make sure this is not the case, you will need to access the microphone window settings.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Press Win + I, this will take you to the settings.
  • Click Confidentiality, then Microphone.

  • Click on Activate if you find that the microphone is deactivated.

From there, you can also choose the applications that have access to your microphone. If you find that a microphone-dependent application such as Skype is disabled, you can activate it.

Method 3: Checking the microphone driver in Windows 10

If you recently updated your Windows and after updating your microphone has stopped working, it may be a driver problem.

Having the latest drivers is very important because if you have an outdated driver, your entire audio system may not work, including your microphone.

You can view the status of your pilot by doing the following:

  • Go to the Start menu, in the search field, type Device Manager.
  • In the Device Manager list, click Sound and Video Controllers.
  • Right click on the available audio drivers and select Properties

You will be able to see if your pilot is up to date or not. If it is not day, you will have to update it.

Method 4: Sound control

Another reason why your microphone may not work is that the microphone levels have been set too low in the sound settings.

  • To resolve this issue, right-click the sound icon in the taskbar, then click Sound.
  • Under the Registration tab > Microphone > Properties.
  • Slide the two scales on the level tabs to the right to increase the microphone level and amplify it.

Method 5: Convert a microphone to a default device

To do this, you will need to go to the control panel.

  • Click on Win + X
  • Choose Control Panel> Sound
  • Go to the Recording tab> Microphone
  • Select Define by default –

If the methods listed above do not resolve your microphone in Windows 10, consider having your computer serviced by a technician, as noted above.
