Apple wants your MacBook to wake up without you needing to touch it

enero 19, 2020

icon macbook 2016In 2009, Apple filed a patent to wake it up from its Macs. The objective described was to wake up a MacBook, an iMac, a TV or any other similar device without needing to touch it. Currently, you can wake up your MacBook either by opening it or by touching the keyboard or trackpad if it is already open. Things may change soon.

An integration of technology in the next Mac?

Why are we talking about a patent filed in 2009? There is a reason for this. Apple has revive the idea through a new patent registered last week in the USPTO registry. The difference is that the 2020 patent is more precise and we can see a clear difference in the technologies that the engineers of the Mac team plan to exploit.

In the new patent, Apple details techniques for to adjust the sleep state of a computer device. The Californian firm would initially seek reduce the time: standby> operation, when the user wishes to use their MacBook or iMac.
Apple explains that if today the Mac takes several seconds to wake up, it's because of boot of the components internal, there are many of them and they all have to answer before the screen turns on.

The engineers of the Californian firm would therefore work on sensors which would communicate with Mac software. As soon as these sensors detect the presence of the user, the Mac would prepare its exit from sleep before you touch it.
You will then tell me, but what would these sensors be?

These could be, for example, proximity sensors, light sensors, accrometers, gyroscopes, image sensors or microphones.
Everything imaginable to detect very close presence of the user. For example, the accelerator could be used to detect when you are handling your MacBook. Proximity sensors detect when you sit in front of your iMac.

The patent that Apple filed in 2009 was very limited in the explanations. It must be said that this period, the Californian firm had other more urgent concerns … We found for example in this patent details on sensors and beams infrared who were present to detect the presence of a user who was to touch an Apple device.

In the 2020 patent, the firm brings additional and more modern technologies such as facial recognition (up to a distance of 1.52 m). This would serve to see if the user who is approaching the device is indeed the owner user, if this is the case, the Mac could light.

Apple would entrust a great responsibility Siri

By delving a little more into the patent, it is noted among the many lines, that Apple would find a role Siri. Indeed, the voice assistant would remain active constantly to detect noises in the room. The user could also wake up their iMac / MacBook via voice with the command "Say Siri, turn on the Mac".
