Apple Acquires Xnor.ai Specializes in Low Power AI

enero 17, 2020

Apple acquired Xnor.ai, a Seattle-based startup specializing in low-power artificial intelligence technologies.

Among the various works carried out, Xnorai provided artificial intelligence technology behind the human detection function on certain Wyze security cameras. The Apple acquisition also explains why Wyze recently lost these features to its cameras, as the company said a few days ago:

Human Detection will be temporarily removed from Wyze Cam from a new firmware release scheduled for mid-January 2020, due to the unexpected termination of the agreement with our AI provider. We are preparing to launch our internal version of people detection later this year, which will remain free for our users.

Apple already offers its own people tracking feature with HomeKit Secure Video technology. However, there is still a lot of room for several improvements.

Neither Apple nor Xnorai have confirmed the deal, but today?s news suggests that Apple paid $ 200 million to complete the acquisition. The Xnor.ai team is likely to move into the offices of Apple Seattle.

Xnorai's motto is ?AI Everywhere, for Everyone? and has developed several key technologies to support this phrase. The company's main focus is on machine learning and image recognition tools that can run on low-power devices, rather than relying on cloud infrastructure.

In addition, the company has created a platform "self-service" which made it easier for developers to use artificial intelligence code and data in their applications.

In 2016, Apple acquired the Seattle-based startup Turi as part of its efforts to improve its machine learning and artificial intelligence teams. With this other acquisition, the company confirms the keen interest in these technologies.
