Android is an operating system full of surprises, and among them the developer options have a big place. These options are intended for professionals, but many are useful for the average user. Here are 13 secret tips to improve your Android experience.
How to access developer options
First, you need to go to your phone settings. Click on Settings> About phone. You will see a menu called build number. Click on it seven times: a notification will appear informing you that you have activated the developer options (which will now be available in the settings menu).
1. Keep the screen active at all times
If you are working on long durations with your phone and are tired of the screen that goes all by itself, this option is for you. This allows you to keep the screen of your mobile device permanently active, even during recharging. To reach it, you will need to use the on / off button.
2. Limit background applications
This option allows you to limit the number of applications that can run in the background. The selection is limited to a maximum of four simultaneous apps, but it is also possible to select any app. The processes will thus close automatically after having used them.
3. Display the contours of the design
This option shows all edges and contours of the virtual system. Once active, it allows you to see all the limits of Android. This tool helps developers who work in interface design.
4. Force GPU rendering
This option will activate on all 2D hardware applications, even if they are designed to work with other renderings. Forced rendering will improve the performance of your device, but can present hardware risks: use it with care.
5. Show GPU usage
By selecting this option, you will be able to display GPU information on the screen. The tool shows all the active processes using the GPU and gives you graphical representations to illustrate it all.
6. Show the screen pulsations
This option allows you to see gestures made on the phone screen. This visual feedback helps developers and users who want to see what's happening on their screen.
7. Simulate secondary notches
This option shows the secondary screens in different resolutions. It is thus possible to simulate the behavior of the mobile with other screen sizes and resolutions (miniature watches on the screen).
8. Process statistics
This option allows you to see all the processes and applications active during the last 23 hours. By selecting an application, it is possible to display information on the use of the RAM memory, the execution time and the services used.
9. Pointer location
The location of the pointer shows the trajectory of the pointer on the screen and all the data selected by the user, as well as the different parts of the screen concerned. In addition, it is possible to measure the accuracy of touch.
10. Restore the speed of the animations of the system
You can completely disable the animations on your mobile to speed up the launching speed of applications. This option is valid for interfaces with a lot of animations, or for specially slow phones.
11. Force the MSAA 4x
MultiSample Anti-Aliasing improves the quality of graphics in OpenGL ES 2.0 games and applications. Keep in mind that activating this option will require good hardware, and will consume the battery faster. You should however have better graphics thanks to MSAA 4x.
12. Activate USB debugging
These are one of the most used options. It allows programs from your PC to access the device via a USB cable. This is an intermediate step to root your phone, unlock it or install a ROM without rooting.
13. Password for computer security copy
If you wish to create a security copy of your data stored on your computer, it is recommended that you password protect it. This option encrypts the copy, be careful not to forget your password if you do not want to lose the data!
We recommend that you do not activate the developer options if you are not familiar with their operation.
